Summary

Praise for the previous edition:
"...a captivating blend of biography and science history..."—Booklist

For centuries humans successfully but unscientifically practiced genetics by selecting and breeding the best pets and farm animals. In 1900, 30 years after Gregor Mendel revealed the basic processes of genetic inheritance, Mendel's findings began a revolution in the biological sciences.

Recent genetic discoveries offer many opportunities to improve the human condition. New genetic information will eventually be used to combat the aging process and prevent conditions such as cancer and heart disease. In addition to affecting human health, genetic techniques are being used to develop new species of plants that are resistant to frost, drought, fungal infections, and insect attack.

New Genetics explains how the science of genetics emerged from attempts to improve plants and animals by selective breeding. Describing the successive stages in this revolution as well as the men and women who played crucial roles in its progress, this book conveys the social impact of modern genetic research and that of the emergent science of molecular biology.
